ZMWG’s contribution featured in The People’s Environment Narrative

The Zero Mercury Working Group (ZMWG) has been invited to contribute to the publication: “The People’s Environment Narrative (PEN): 50 Years of Work for the Environment by Civil Society, the Global NGO Community, and Other Stakeholders“, published in September 2022 and finalised in December 2022.

The publication commemorates 50 years of work for the environment carried out by the United Nations Environment Programme, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders. It can now be downloaded here or on the https://towardstockholm50.org/ website. The report highlights key achievements, challenges, and lessons learned from stakeholder engagement in global environmental governance since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.

ZMWG’s contribution, Supporting National & Global Efforts Towards a Zero Mercury Future (p.241 of the publication), authored by ZMWG co-coordinators Elena Lymberidi-Settimo and Michael Bender, traces back the evolution of global action on mercury pollution and the role civil society has played in advancing solutions. The report also documents the creation of the ZMWG in 2005, established by the Mercury Policy Project, the European Environmental Bureau, and partner organizations to strengthen international cooperation on mercury reduction. Since its creation, ZMWG has worked to support the development and implementation of mercury policies at national, regional, and global levels while amplifying the voices and expertise of civil society organizations, particularly from the Global South.
