Making the case for a ban on mercury lamps

Fluorescent lamps containing mercury have been the subject of a lengthy dispute between a handful of companies, campaigners and EU institutions. Despite increasing evidence of their negative impact on the environment, mercury-added light bulbs continue to be sold across Europe against the advice of the European Commission’s own experts and the United Nations.

In January 2020, we wrote to European Commission’s vice-president Frans Timmermans, calling for an immediate ban under the EU’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.
