EEB/ZMWG supported projects focusing on phasing out mercury added products

2014-2017 Projects in Africa

In 2014, the EEB/ZMWG launched an FAO/EC supported project entitled: “Contributing to the preparation/implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, with a focus on developing strategies for phasing out mercury-added products and on reducing mercury use in Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining through development of National Action Plans.”

Work in Nigeria and Mauritius focused on phasing out mercury added producst. On the basis of these experiences a few reports and useful documents have been produced which could help governments develop their national strategies towards phasing out mercury added products.

Similar projects took also place in Kenya, Cote d' Ivoire and South Africa in 2016.

In May 2017 an African regional conference took place in Nairobi to present the outcomes of the project - see also our African Regional Conferences, Nairobi, 22-26 May 2017 - blog
